St. Peter Altarpiece

St. Peter stands in the main niche with his keys and a rather slim volume that may represent his two New Testament letters. As usual he has a short, square beard. In the Madonna and Child above the child's tug on his mother's veil is a detail ultimately derived from the Byzantine Pelagonitissa type.

Mary is flanked by the statues of the most commonly pictured female saints with their attributes: left to right, Barbara (palm branch and chalice), Catherine of Alexandria (palm branch and broken wheel), Mary Magdalene (vase, flowing hair), and Margaret of Antioch (hand cross).

In the lower register, the saints flanking Peter are Jerome (cardinal's hat, maquette of a church), John the Baptist (animal-skin tunic, lamb on book), someone holding what looks like a scroll, and John Gualbert (hand cross, monk's habit).
